Anton Donkor: Schalke 04’s German-Ghanaian defender linked with OFI Crete switch

German-Ghanaian left-back Anton Donkor of FC Schalke 04 is being linked with a move to Greek Super League side OFI Crete as the Bundesliga club weigh up interest in the 28-year-old defender.

Donkor, who joined Schalke on a free transfer from Eintracht Braunschweig ahead of the 2024-25 season, is under contract with the Gelsenkirchen side until 30 June 2027, meaning any deal would require OFI to negotiate a fee. His current market value stands at around €400,000, a figure likely to shape initial discussions between the clubs.

The left-back has built a strong resume in German professional football, with close to 100 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga and more than 100 in the 3. Liga. That experience, together with his ability to operate on either foot, is understood to be attracting OFI as they look to add depth and reliability on the left side of their defence.

Donkor played a part in Schalke’s resurgence as they secured the German second-tier title in the 2025-26 campaign, adding another honour to a career that has also included youth success with VfL Wolfsburg and a spell in English development football with Everton’s U23s. Born in Gottingen in November 1997 and standing at 1.86m, he offers a physically imposing option at full-back with a track record of contributing in both penalty areas.

For now, Schalke retain control of Donkor’s future, with one year gone on a three-year deal signed in 2024 and no agreement yet in place for a transfer.
