Antoine Mendy’s first outings for Senegal have left a strong impression, with the young right-back delivering assured performances against Sudan and Togo.
The 20-year-old OGC Nice defender has quickly adapted to international football, showing both defensive discipline and attacking intent.
Pape Thiaw’s selection pays off
In his first squad as Senegal coach, Pape Thiaw introduced several new faces, including Yehvann Diouf, Ilay Camara, Assane Diao, Richard Sagna, and Mendy.
The decision to bring in fresh talent has already begun to pay dividends, with Mendy seizing his opportunity.
Having progressed through the ranks at OGC Nice, Mendy signed his first professional contract in October 2022.
His leadership as captain of the club’s reserve team had already drawn the attention of former Nice coach Lucien Favre, who spoke highly of his potential.
“I see him developing well; he’s already close to reaching the highest level. He has a magnificent temperament and mentality. If he continues like this, he’ll become a very good player,” Favre remarked.
Impressive performances for the Lions
Mendy made his debut in the goalless draw against Sudan, where he was solid in defense and contributed offensively with well-timed passes, particularly to Ismaïla Sarr and Boulaye Dia.
Rated 6.5/10 for his performance, he showcased composure beyond his years.
His teammates took notice, with Ilay Camara praising his efforts. Antoine played very well, we’re all proud of him.
I hope to do the same when I get my chance.
Against Togo, Mendy came on in the 55th minute and once again impressed, helping Senegal secure a 2-0 victory.
His ability to read the game and make timely interventions further reinforced the belief that he has a bright future with the national team.
Ambitions for the future
After his strong start, Mendy spoke about his pride in representing Senegal and his aspirations moving forward.
“We took some important points. It was tough against Sudan, but we held on. Taking three points at home is positive for the future. With this exceptional squad, it’s a dream come true. With such great players, settling into the den is easier.”
A key player in the making?
Mendy’s next challenge will be to maintain his momentum at club level.
An ankle injury between November and December limited him to 12 Ligue 1 appearances this season.
However, Nice has suffered only one defeat when he has started, highlighting his defensive influence.
With his maturity, technical ability, and determination, Antoine Mendy has all the attributes to become a mainstay in the Senegalese national team for years to come.
