Nottingham Forest forward Anthony Elanga has highlighted his team’s tactical shift this season, crediting their evolving style of play for their impressive position in the Premier League standings.
The Swedish international scored the decisive goal in Forest’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Tuesday, a result that propelled them to third place and strengthened their bid for a Champions League spot.
“It’s not rocket science, but it works”
Elanga acknowledged that while Forest’s tactical approach may seem straightforward, there is more to it than meets the eye.
“It’s not rocket science – you can see that on the internet,” he said. “We probably have the lowest possession in the league, but it’s effective, and it’s something we’ve been working on since pre-season.”
Under their current system, Forest has refined their approach beyond simply defending and counterattacking, opting instead for a more disciplined and structured game plan that maximizes their strengths.
Adapting to a new identity
Elanga admitted that transitioning to a new playing style required adaptation, but he believes the changes are benefiting the squad.
“You want to play football – you want to have the ball. But we have qualities to hit teams on the counterattack,” he explained.
Rather than focusing solely on defensive solidity, Forest’s system now emphasizes flexibility and fluidity in attack.
“I can move around, switch to number ten,” Elanga added. “Every player finds their space and works for each other. That’s what we’re doing this season. Every player can play in any position, and that unity is important. It shows on the pitch—the way we work for each other.”
Defensive strength key to success
Forest’s defensive resilience has been another cornerstone of their season, with the team enjoying an impressive run of 13 games without conceding a goal.
Elanga acknowledged the importance of maintaining this solidity as they continue their push for European qualification.
“We’ve been solid at the back, and that gives us confidence going forward. If we keep this up, we’ll keep climbing the table,” he said.
With Nottingham Forest thriving under their new tactical blueprint, Elanga and his teammates are determined to maintain their momentum as they edge closer to a potential place in the Champions League next season.
