Igor Vetokele Switches International Allegiance to Angola
Igor Vetokele, the talented Belgian striker for Copenhagen, has decided to represent his country of birth, Angola, at the international level. The 22-year-old forward, who had been hopeful of making Belgium’s squad for the 2014 World Cup but was ultimately left out, announced on Twitter that he will be joining the Palancas Negras for two upcoming friendly matches.
Vetokele confirmed his involvement in the friendly fixtures against Morocco and Iran, sharing the news with his followers. “I can now confirm that I will participate in two friendly matches with the Angolan national team against Morocco and Iran,” he tweeted.
Although Vetokele began his career with Cercle Bruges and represented various Belgian youth teams at the U17, U18, U19, and U21 levels, his roots in Angola have led him to switch his allegiance to the country of his birth. Born in Luanda, the capital of Angola, Vetokele’s decision comes after an impressive season in Denmark, where he scored 13 goals in the Superligaen with FC Copenhagen, also featuring in the UEFA Champions League.
His strong form has drawn attention from clubs, with Belgian side RC Genk reportedly interested in securing his services. Vetokele’s decision to represent Angola marks a new chapter in his international career, and he will now aim to make an impact with the Palancas Negras as they prepare for future competitions.
