Since last week, speculation has been swirling on social media in Algeria about Andy Delort’s potential switch to the national team. The Montpellier striker, who has scored 13 goals this season, is reported to have Algerian roots and is interested in obtaining citizenship to become eligible for the Fennecs.
Delort fueled the discussion by retweeting a fan’s post celebrating Algeria, which read: “one, two, three, viva Algeria,” signaling his connection to the country and enthusiasm for representing it.
On Monday, the former Toulouse player addressed the matter at a press conference, reiterating his intentions. “My application for Algerian naturalization is a family and personal matter,” he explained, emphasizing that his decision goes beyond football and reflects his personal and family ties.
If finalized, Delort’s naturalization could allow him to bring his goal-scoring prowess to the Algerian national team, providing the Fennecs with a valuable attacking option ahead of upcoming competitions.
