Andres Iniesta Morocco role collapses over financial dispute

Andres Iniesta’s proposed move to join the Moroccan national setup has fallen through due to a financial disagreement, according to Marca.

The former Barcelona star had been strongly linked with a senior technical role with the Atlas Lions, with talks ongoing since AFCON 2025.

Reports suggested Iniesta was in line for a sporting or technical director position, but negotiations hit a major snag earlier this week when the two parties failed to agree on financial terms. As a result, the deal is now considered completely off, and Morocco has moved forward with their restructuring plans.

The AFCON 2025 runners-up have already appointed Mohamed Ouahbi as their new head coach following the departure of Walid Regragui.

Looking ahead, ex-Barcelona coach and club legend Xavi is viewed as a possible candidate to take over as Morocco manager after the 2026 World Cup, raising the prospect of a future reunion with Iniesta if circumstances change.
