Andrea Belotti set to join Serie B side Modena as a free agent

Andrea Belotti is close to joining Modena, with the former Italy striker expected to return to Italy’s second tier during the current transfer window, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The 32-year-old is due to arrive in Modena on Monday evening, 7 September, before undergoing a medical on Tuesday. The checks are expected to precede the completion of his move to the Serie B club.

Belotti is available as a free agent after leaving Cagliari during the summer transfer window. His proposed return to Cagliari was abandoned after further medical examinations indicated that he needed more time to recover from an injury.

The forward had reached an agreement with Cagliari earlier this summer to extend his contract and remain with the club in Serie A. However, the deal was not completed after the additional tests raised concerns over his recovery period.

Belotti was affected by an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the previous season. The problem restricted his appearances and kept him out of action for a significant period.

A move to Modena would take Belotti back to Serie B, where he previously played for Palermo during the 2013-14 season. At that stage of his career, he was regarded as one of the competition’s emerging talents.

The striker made eight appearances for Cagliari last season and scored two goals. He has since become a free agent, leaving Modena within reach of securing his services without a transfer fee, subject to the outcome of his medical examination.

Belotti’s expected arrival would give Modena an experienced attacking option as the club competes in Italy’s second tier. The move would also mark another stage in a career that began with Palermo and later took him to the top level of Italian football, as well as the Italy national team.

For now, the transfer remains close rather than complete. Belotti’s medical on Tuesday is the next step before the proposed agreement with Modena can be finalised.
