Andre Onana leads Europe’s goalkeepers with 89.1% save rate

Andre Onana has emerged as Europe’s most effective goalkeeper by save percentage after producing three successive clean sheets for Trabzonspor.

The Cameroon international responded to Trabzonspor’s 1-0 defeat away to Konyaspor on matchday five by shutting out the opposition in each of his next three appearances. His form has helped the Turkish side secure three consecutive victories against Besiktas, Samsunspor and Galatasaray.

Trabzonspor defeated Besiktas 2-0, Samsunspor 0-3 and Galatasaray 4-0 during that run, with Onana providing a significant contribution from goal.

The 30-year-old has made 15 decisive saves across those matches. That total includes seven efforts stopped from inside the penalty area and seven saves in the match against Besiktas on matchday eight alone.

According to a ranking published by Sabah Spor assessing save percentages across European leagues, Onana is currently first with an efficiency rate of 89.1%.

The goalkeeper, who is on loan at Trabzonspor from Manchester United, tops a list that also includes Christos Mandas of Lazio, on 87.5%, and Turkish goalkeeper Berke Ozer of LOSC, who has recorded an 82.6% save rate.

Onana’s figure places him ahead of the leading goalkeepers operating in England, Germany, Italy and France, further underlining the strength of his performances since joining Trabzonspor.

His form also reinforces his position as the leading active African goalkeeper, according to the report.

Onana is currently valued at €8m and remains under contract with Manchester United until 2028. The goalkeeper, who was born in Nkol Ngok, earned €7,190,000 per year, equivalent to 4,673,500,000 FCFA, during his time in England.

Trabzonspor’s next fixture will come in the third matchday of the Conference League league phase, when they face Heart of Midlothian.

Onana will be aiming to extend his run of clean sheets in that European meeting after helping Trabzonspor move through a demanding domestic sequence with victories over Besiktas, Samsunspor and Galatasaray.
