FC Barcelona may be preparing the ground for a surprising reunion. Although the Catalan club allowed André Onana to leave in 2014, the Cameroonian goalkeeper is once again on their radar. With uncertainty surrounding the future of Jasper Cillessen, who could depart in search of more regular playing time, Barça are actively exploring options to reinforce their goalkeeping department.
The Blaugrana’s interest in Onana is far from new. The former La Masia product has developed impressively since leaving Barcelona, establishing himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in Europe with Ajax Amsterdam. His consistent performances in the Eredivisie and the Champions League have only strengthened his reputation, and Barcelona continue to view him as a serious candidate, particularly as a potential solution to their need for a high-level backup who could also challenge for the number one spot.
According to Le 10 Sport, Barcelona have maintained regular contact with Onana’s entourage, despite the fact that the 23-year-old recently signed a contract extension with Ajax. This ongoing dialogue shows that the Spanish giants are carefully monitoring his situation and keeping their options open, should circumstances become favorable.
However, bringing Onana back to the Camp Nou will not be an easy task. First, his new contract significantly strengthens Ajax’s position, meaning any transfer would require substantial financial negotiations. The Dutch club has no urgent need to sell and is fully aware of Onana’s value, both on the pitch and on the market.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Onana’s sporting ambitions could complicate any potential move. Currently the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper at Ajax, he plays regularly in domestic competitions and on the European stage. Accepting a secondary role at Barcelona would represent a major change in status, something the Cameroonian is unlikely to embrace at this stage of his career, especially given his desire to continue progressing as a starter.
While Barcelona’s interest remains genuine, the conditions for a deal are far from straightforward. Between Ajax’s strong contractual position and Onana’s own expectations, the Blaugrana face a complex challenge if they truly intend to bring their former academy player back to the club.
