André Onana faces Norwegian controversy over match incident

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has become embroiled in a dispute following United’s 3-2 victory over Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt. The issue arose from an incident during the match where Onana, positioned at the edge of his penalty area, executed a tackle to regain possession of the ball.

The controversy centered on whether Onana had committed a handball outside the box.

The referee, supported by VAR, determined that no infringement had occurred, avoiding a potential red card for the Cameroonian keeper.

This decision proved pivotal in securing United’s hard-fought victory.

Bodø/Glimt captain Patrick Berg shared his perspective on Norwegian television, stating, “I have the impression that Jens [Petter Hauge] tries to pass the ball past Onana and then touches it with his hand.

However, the referee clarified that the hand’s placement on the ground for support exempts it from being considered a handball, aligning with FIFA regulations.

Despite this explanation, Bodø/Glimt midfielder Håkon Evjen expressed doubt.

It looks like he takes it with his hand from time to time, whether there is support or not. It’s debatable,” Evjen commented, adding fuel to the post-match discussions.

While the incident did not prompt a significant protest on the pitch, it sparked extensive debate in the Norwegian and Swedish media.

Kristoffer Løkberg, a football analyst for NRK, questioned the consistency of the VAR decision, arguing that Hauge appeared to have been denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

The result leaves United in 12th place in the Europa League standings with nine points, surpassing Bodø/Glimt, who now trail in 17th with seven points.

The incident continues to stir discussion about the interpretation and application of handball rules in critical match situations.
