Cameroon goalkeeper Onana risks suspension amid fresh fallout with Fecafoot
Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana is facing the possibility of a lengthy suspension from the national team after tensions escalated with the Cameroonian Football Federation, FECAFOOT, and its president Samuel Eto’o.
The situation follows comments made by Onana during a live TikTok session in mid-April, where he addressed ongoing disagreements within the national setup. “ I have no problems with the national team, I have no problem with Fecafoot.
I disagree with an individual who is using Fecafoot and the national team to settle scores. ” He also added: “ If you don’t agree, we’ll kick you off. ”
According to reports from Sport News Africa, the goalkeeper’s case is expected to be reviewed at the next FECAFOOT general assembly, where disciplinary action could be considered. One of the options reportedly on the table is a multi-year suspension from international duty.
The same report suggests that Eto’o initially considered imposing direct sanctions on Onana but was advised against doing so by those close to him, in order to avoid accusations of acting unilaterally.
Onana, who currently plays for Manchester United, has already been absent from recent Cameroon squads. Following a change in head coach and the appointment of David Pagou, he was not selected for either the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations or the March training camp.
Sources close to the player indicate that the proposed suspension may have limited practical impact. Onana is said to have distanced himself from the national team setup, with his entourage telling SNA that he is “no longer focused on the national team” and does not expect to return while the current leadership remains in place.
The latest developments add to a long-standing and increasingly strained relationship between Onana and the Cameroon national team.
After the 2022 World Cup, he temporarily stepped away from international football amid disagreements with then-coach Rigobert Song, before returning in September 2023.
However, tensions resurfaced during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where his role in the team was reduced following further disagreements involving Eto’o.
With Eto’o re-elected as head of FECAFOOT in November 2025, the prospect of reconciliation now appears remote, leaving Onana’s international future uncertain as the dispute continues.
