Andoni Iraola urges Rio Ngumoha to ignore outside noise after impressive Villarreal display

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has urged Rio Ngumoha to remain focused on his development and avoid being distracted by growing attention following the teenager’s impressive performance against Villarreal in the Champions League.

The 18-year-old winger earned widespread praise for his display in Liverpool’s 4-3 victory over the Spanish side on Tuesday, showcasing his pace, dribbling ability and attacking confidence on the European stage.

However, Iraola believes Ngumoha must remain grounded and continue working on his game rather than allowing positive or negative reactions to influence his performances.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Brighton, the Liverpool boss stressed the importance of maintaining the right mentality.

“I think every player has to focus on performances, on keeping doing well and improving the things he can improve,” Iraola said.

“The outside noise, when it’s good, when it’s bad, I think it affects, obviously, but we have to not be affected by those things.”

The Liverpool manager acknowledged that praise and criticism are inevitable for players performing at the highest level but insisted that neither should become a distraction.

“You continue to do your job as good as you can, try to improve the things you can improve and don’t be too affected by the things you can hear,” he added.

“When you do well they are going to praise you, when you do bad they are going to be critics but don’t let those things affect too much the performance, which in the end is the most important thing.”

Ngumoha’s performance against Villarreal marked another significant milestone in his emergence at Liverpool. The youngster demonstrated his ability to trouble experienced defenders and contribute to the team’s attacking play, further strengthening his case for regular involvement.

His development has attracted attention from supporters and pundits, with many encouraged by his confidence and willingness to take on opponents.

Nevertheless, Iraola’s message makes clear that the teenager still has areas to improve as he adapts to the demands of senior football.

Liverpool now turn their attention to Brighton, with Ngumoha hoping to build on his European performance if given another opportunity.

For Iraola, the priority is ensuring that the young winger continues to progress steadily, remaining focused on his football rather than the growing expectations surrounding his future.
