Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke has named Ademola Lookman as a leading contender to succeed Victor Osimhen as Africa’s top footballer. Lookman, 26, has delivered standout performances for both club and country, and Amuneke believes the winger’s rise could see him crowned the next CAF Player of the Year.

Lookman has enjoyed a stellar year, notably helping Atalanta to UEFA Europa League glory.

His remarkable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen and his inclusion in the prestigious 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist have positioned him as a strong candidate for continental honors.

In seven appearances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Lookman also scored three goals, further boosting his credentials on the international stage.

Amuneke, a former African Footballer of the Year, expressed his admiration for the Atalanta star, highlighting his potential to claim Africa’s top individual prize.

“He’s in line to be crowned CAF Player of the Year if he continues the way he’s doing,” Amuneke told SportsBoom. “I watched the last game against Rwanda, and his performance was outstanding.”

Lookman’s consistent displays have drawn praise from many quarters, but Amuneke’s endorsement carries significant weight given the Nigerian legend’s own decorated footballing history.

As a former winner of the prestigious African Footballer of the Year title, Amuneke’s insights into the attributes needed to succeed at the highest level resonate deeply.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s history of producing world-class talent, Amuneke noted that Lookman’s rise would be a proud moment for the nation.

“If a Nigerian wins it next, it is definitely a joyous one,” he said, acknowledging previous Nigerian winners such as Victor Ikpeba and Nwankwo Kanu, both of whom earned the accolade during their illustrious careers.

The winger’s remarkable journey from making an impact in the Premier League to becoming a key figure in Serie A with Atalanta speaks to his adaptability and growth.

At both domestic and international levels, Lookman has proven his ability to deliver in high-pressure moments, making him a potential successor to Osimhen as Africa’s standout player.

Should Lookman secure the CAF Player of the Year award, it would continue Nigeria’s tradition of producing exceptional footballing talent, and with Amuneke’s backing, his prospects for the future look increasingly promising.
