Amr Zahran faces possible four-match ban after Al Ahly incident

The Egyptian Basketball Federation is preparing to investigate Al Ahly player Amr Zahran following an incident during his side’s match against Al Qanah in the Egyptian Basketball Linked League.

The likely punishment is a suspension for either two or four matches, according to FilGoal.com. Zahran could also be fined between EGP 50,000 and EGP 100,000.

The federation’s board has referred the Al Ahly men’s first-team player to an investigation over his conduct during the match, which was played in the second round of the Basketball Linked League.

Zahran is due to appear before the investigation committee on Wednesday to give his account of the incident. The committee will then consider the appropriate action under the regulations and rules governing the competition.

The federation said the decision reflects the board’s commitment to enforcing its regulations and maintaining discipline across its competitions. It also stressed the importance of hearing from all parties before any final decision is made.

Al Ahly secured an 82-62 victory over Al Qanah in the second round of the Egyptian Basketball Linked League.

The Basketball Linked League is a significant competition in the Egyptian basketball season. Its standings determine the first-round match-ups in the Super League, which serves as a route to the African Basketball League, with the pairings based on the final positions of the participating teams.

Sixteen clubs are taking part in the competition: Al Ahly, Al Ittihad Alexandria, Telecom Egypt, Zamalek, Petrojet, Sporting, Smouha, Al Gezira, Al Qanah, Tala’ea El Gaish, Heliopolis, Olympic, Ashab El Gead, El Shams, El Zohour and Damanhour Games.

The preliminary stage is being played over home and away fixtures. A team earns two points for winning either a men’s match or an Under-16 linked fixture, while the losing side receives one point.

The group winners from each of the four groups advance directly to the quarter-finals. Teams finishing second and third enter play-off matches to compete for places in the last eight.

Al Ahly are the holders of the most recent men’s Basketball Linked League title, having beaten Al Ittihad Alexandria in the final.
