Amoura’s Nice move tested by concerns beyond football

Mohamed Amoura wanted to join OGC Nice but reportedly needed reassurance about the club and city’s reputation for racism before completing his move from Wolfsburg.

The Algeria international’s concern was not entirely without context. Nice has acquired a reputation in France that is sometimes linked with the far right and xenophobia, although applying that image to an entire city or all of its residents would clearly be reductive. Nevertheless, the perception appears to have reached the player during negotiations.

Roger Ricort, OGC Nice’s sporting director, described the unusual circumstances surrounding Amoura’s arrival in an interview with Nice-Matin.

“We had to convince him because he had heard that people in Nice are racist. We made sure that this information was not confirmed and was disproved,” Ricort said.

The comments underline that the club had to address more than its sporting plans or financial terms to complete the deal.

Amoura eventually joined Nice from Wolfsburg on loan, with a non-mandatory purchase option understood to be worth 20 million euros.

The 24-year-old forward also had two trusted contacts who knew the club well: Youcef Atal and Hicham Boudaoui, his Algeria team-mates. Both players encouraged him to accept the move to the French Riviera.

“Hicham and Atal told me that the club is magnificent, that there is everything here and that I could succeed,” Amoura said.

Atal’s perspective carried particular weight. The former Nice full-back experienced a highly tense period in 2023 after sharing a social-media post in the context of the war in Gaza.

He was suspended by the club and later prosecuted. After removing the post and apologising, Atal was eventually convicted, in a case that many members of the Algerian public viewed as an especially severe response.

Nice had also been affected by allegations involving former manager Christophe Galtier. His former sporting director, Julien Fournier, accused him of making discriminatory remarks about the origins or religion of some players, with Boudaoui’s name notably mentioned in the case.

Galtier has always denied the allegations. He was ultimately acquitted at first instance, with the court ruling that the alleged offences had not been sufficiently established.

Those incidents do not, of course, define OGC Nice or its supporters as a whole. They do, however, help explain why the issue may have had particular significance for Amoura while he considered the transfer.

From a sporting perspective, the Algerian appears to have made the choice with confidence. He reportedly resisted late interest from Lyon in order to join Nice.

His immediate priority is now on the pitch. Amoura is looking to rediscover his finishing touch after a lengthy period without scoring and revive his career in Ligue 1.

The move gives him the opportunity to establish himself in France while working under a club whose project ultimately persuaded him to make Nice his destination.
