Christopher Giwa Elected as New Head of Nigeria Football Federation Amid Controversy
On Tuesday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held an elective general assembly marked by the absence of Aminu Maigari, the ousted and detained former head of the NFF. Christopher Giwa was overwhelmingly elected as the new president, securing 27 out of 29 votes, defeating Mike Umeh, the outgoing vice-president.
However, the election is contested by some members of the NFF, who are demanding a fresh congress scheduled for September 4 to resolve the dispute.
Maigari, who was supposed to oversee the meeting, remains in detention in Abuja along with NFF secretary general Musa Amadu and another executive member, all facing allegations of financial misconduct.
This turmoil follows Maigari’s suspension by the Minister of Sports in July and his subsequent reinstatement after FIFA’s intervention, plunging Nigerian football into further crisis just before the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
