On the night of June 29-30, 2018, Moroccan midfielder Amine Harit was involved in a tragic car accident in Marrakech that claimed the life of a young man. The incident had a profound impact on the player, who described it as one of the most difficult moments of his life.
Speaking to L’Equipe in an interview relayed by Foot Mercato, Harit recounted the events in detail. “There have been unforeseen circumstances in life that have made this season more complicated for me. And this accident, a tragedy that is difficult to forget,” he said. The midfielder explained that he and his younger brother were going out to eat around 10 p.m. at the time. While he was not driving at an exceptional speed, he admitted that he was slightly over the 60 km/h speed limit, traveling at 10 to 15 km/h above the limit, when someone unexpectedly crossed the road, resulting in the fatal impact.
Harit recalled the immediate aftermath of the accident, describing the shock and difficulty of processing the event. “I parked a little further away, 100 or 150 meters from the accident, because I had trouble processing what had happened. It’s very difficult to do that in the moment. And I waited for the police to arrive, in a state of shock—the worst moment of my life,” he said. The experience left a lasting impression, highlighting both the suddenness of tragedy and the emotional toll it can take.
The player also expressed gratitude toward the family of the deceased for their understanding. “I thought about this person a lot. You have to understand that, unfortunately, accidents like this happen every day. My parents first went to see the family of the deceased, I wasn’t feeling well at all so I spoke to them on the phone. I felt a little better once I spoke to the mother, to the family, that was what was weighing on me the most. They told me that they didn’t blame me, I am really grateful to them,” Harit explained.
This tragic incident not only affected Harit personally but also complicated his season on the pitch, adding a heavy emotional burden to the pressures of professional football. His openness in discussing the event reflects both his sense of responsibility and his appreciation for the compassion shown by the victim’s family.
