Pyramids defender Mohamed Hamdy suffered a terrifying injury during his team’s Egypt Cup quarterfinal against Petrojet at Petro Sport Stadium on Tuesday, leaving players and fans in visible distress.

Early in the second half, Hamdy collapsed after a challenge, his head crashing violently to the turf before he lost consciousness.

The medical staff sprinted onto the pitch and tried to revive him on the field as tension grew around the stadium. With his condition initially unclear, emergency services were called, and an ambulance had to drive onto the pitch to take him away.

Several Pyramids players and officials were seen in tears as the vehicle left for the nearest hospital, underlining how serious the situation looked in the moment. Goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy insisted on accompanying his teammate in the ambulance.

Egyptian outlets, including Al-Watan, later reported that Hamdy had swallowed his tongue after the heavy impact but was treated quickly and transported for urgent tests.

Pyramids’ head of medical staff, Dr. Mostafa El-Monieri, explained that Hamdy suffered a brief loss of consciousness and tongue swallowing, but the medical team reacted fast, repositioned his tongue and woke him up following standard protocol. He confirmed that Hamdy was fully conscious when leaving the stadium for further examinations and that his condition is reassuring.
