Ambourouet: Gabon draw with Morocco would be ‘a victory’ in CAN 2027 qualifier

Georges Ambourouet believes Gabon will have to produce a disciplined and highly organised performance to take anything from Morocco in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture.

The former Gabon left-back, who also played for Sedan in France, spoke to Gaboneco ahead of the match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. He acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing the Panthers but remains convinced that his former team-mates have a chance of securing a positive result.

Morocco will be regarded as clear favourites on paper, while Gabon are expected to face a particularly hostile atmosphere against the Atlas Lions on home soil.

Ambourouet stressed that the tactical battle would be central to the outcome. Gabon will need to remain compact, limit the space available to Morocco and avoid losing their shape during periods of pressure.

A cautious and disciplined approach will be essential if the Panthers are to frustrate their opponents. Rather than committing too many players forward, Gabon must prioritise defensive organisation and make the most of any opportunities that come their way.

Despite the difficulty of the fixture, Ambourouet has not ruled out Gabon achieving a favourable result in Rabat. He said: “A draw will be seen as a victory.”

The former international’s assessment reflects the difference in expectations between the two sides. Morocco enter the match as the stronger team on paper, but Gabon’s solidarity, concentration and efficiency could allow them to challenge the hosts.
