AmaZulu’s Ngwenya apologises after Nduli stretchered off in Durban

AmaZulu FC forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has apologised to Orlando Pirates midfielder Sihle Nduli after a heavy challenge left the 30-year-old needing to be stretchered from the field during Wednesday’s Betway Premiership draw in Durban.

Nduli had only recently returned to competitive football after missing a prolonged period because of an injury sustained during the first round of last season. His latest setback came in the 1-1 match between AmaZulu, also known as Usuthu, and Pirates, who are commonly referred to as the Buccaneers.

The incident occurred in the second half, with Nduli forced to leave the pitch in the 55th minute. The midfielder’s leg appeared to absorb the full impact of the challenge, prompting immediate concern among those watching the match.

His reaction and the decision to remove him on a stretcher added to fears that he may have suffered another serious injury. However, Pirates have not yet released details regarding the nature or severity of the problem, nor have they said how long Nduli could be unavailable.

Ngwenya has since addressed the incident publicly, stressing that he did not mean to injure his fellow player and offering his support as Nduli begins the recovery process.

“I am sorry, my brother, for what happened. I did not do it intentionally,” Ngwenya said.

“I hope you have space in your heart to forgive me. Speedy recovery.”

The challenge came on a particularly difficult evening for Nduli, who had worked his way back into action after the injury that ruled him out for much of the previous period. A further absence would represent a significant blow for both the player and Orlando Pirates, although the club’s medical assessment has yet to be made public.

The circumstances of the incident have nevertheless raised the possibility that Nduli could face another extended spell on the sidelines. Until Pirates provide an official update, the full extent of the injury remains unclear.

The draw left both sides with a point from the contest in Durban. Orlando Pirates have stayed in the city as they prepare for their next Betway Premiership fixture, against Chippa United at Kings Park Stadium on Sunday.

For AmaZulu and Ngwenya, the focus after the match has been on the welfare of the opposing midfielder. Ngwenya’s apology acknowledged the seriousness of the moment while making clear that the challenge was not intended to cause harm.
