AmaZulu FC have confirmed Primo Sports as their new technical sponsor from next season, drawing a close to their long-standing partnership with Umbro after seven years.
The announcement, made during a press conference on Monday, signals a fresh chapter for the South African Premier Division club, both in terms of branding and commercial strategy.
AmaZulu will become the second top-tier team to sport Primo Sports kits, joining Magesi FC as part of the rapidly growing brand’s presence in South African football.
Club chairman Sandile Zungu addressed the change in technical sponsorship, highlighting the importance of aligning with a brand that resonates with AmaZulu’s values and the needs of its supporters.
“After seven years with Umbro, we are parting ways amicably. In choosing a successor, we were careful to evaluate the brand’s roots and the benefits for our supporters in terms of access to equipment. We believe we have found a long-term partnership with Primo Sports,” Zungu said.
Primo Sports has gained recognition in recent seasons through its association with Magesi FC, who enjoyed a successful campaign last year under the stewardship of Durban-born coach Clinton Larsen.
Magesi achieved promotion to the Premier Soccer League while wearing Primo kits, and later captured national attention by winning the Carling Knockout Cup, defeating powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.
That exposure significantly bolstered Primo’s reputation and credibility within the football community. Despite a rocky start to the current campaign, Magesi’s fortunes have since turned around under head coach Owen da Gama, who took over from Larsen and helped the club steer clear of relegation.
AmaZulu, meanwhile, have had a steady season of their own and currently sit sixth on the DStv Premiership table with 34 points from 27 matches.
With only a handful of games remaining, the club is aiming to finish strongly and consolidate its position in the top half of the standings.
Their final fixture of the season, scheduled for May 24 against Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, will serve as a symbolic moment as the squad takes to the field in Umbro kits for the final time.
From next season, the players will be kitted out in gear supplied by Primo Sports as the club ushers in this new partnership.
The deal reflects a strategic shift in AmaZulu’s commercial direction, as they seek to forge deeper ties with emerging South African brands.
With Primo Sports now stepping into a higher-profile role, the collaboration is expected to bring new merchandising opportunities and fresh energy to the club’s image, both on and off the pitch.
As AmaZulu prepare to enter a new era, the club’s leadership has made clear their intention to foster a mutually beneficial relationship with Primo, one that supports not only performance but also accessibility and connection with fans.
