AmaZulu face a challenging task as they prepare to host Mamelodi Sundowns in a Betway Premiership showdown at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Durban-based team is seeking only their second-ever home league victory against Sundowns in the PSL era.
AmaZulu’s home record against Sundowns has been less than impressive, with just two wins in 19 encounters during the PSL era.
Their most recent league triumph came in the 2021/22 season when Augustine Mulenga’s goal secured a 1-0 victory under then-coach Benni McCarthy.
Before that, AmaZulu had not beaten Sundowns at home in a league match for an astonishing 28 years.
The team’s other notable home success against Sundowns occurred in the 2009/10 Nedbank Cup semi-final, where they emerged victorious on penalties under Neil Tovey’s management.
Despite these rare successes, AmaZulu have generally fared better against Sundowns in away matches, securing four victories in Tshwane over the years.
Heading into Tuesday’s game, AmaZulu’s co-coaches, Vusi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane, will be aiming to change the narrative.
The duo have overseen a steady improvement in recent weeks, with AmaZulu recording three wins in their last five matches.
However, Sundowns, now led by newly appointed Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso, have shown resilience, keeping two clean sheets under his guidance.
Vilakazi remains optimistic despite Sundowns’ stature and recent form, suggesting the team is still adapting to their new manager’s style.
“Sundowns are a strong team, but they are not yet at their peak. This transition period could present an opportunity for us,” he remarked.
AmaZulu’s attacking quartet of Etiosa Ighodaro, Ethan Brooks, Rowan Human, and Hendrik Ekstein has shown promise recently.
However, Ighodaro, who is on loan from Sundowns, may be ruled out due to a contract clause preventing him from playing against his parent club.
Vilakazi praised his forwards for their growing understanding but emphasized the need for greater efficiency in front of goal and stronger defensive performances.
“We’re seeing positive signs in attack, but there’s still room for improvement in finishing and defensive solidity,” he added.
Sundowns, known for their dominance in South African football, will undoubtedly pose a formidable challenge.
AmaZulu, however, are determined to seize the moment and deliver a memorable performance for their home fans.
