AmaZulu face trophy pressure after fourth-place finish, says Zwane

AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane says the club must win silverware this season as expectations rise following their fourth-place finish in the Betway Premiership last campaign.

The KwaZulu-Natal side have already made a positive start to their preparations by winning the KZN Premier’s Cup ahead of the new season. That success has increased supporters’ hopes, but Zwane accepts that a regional cup will not remove the pressure on his team to deliver a major trophy.

AmaZulu have not won a major trophy for a considerable period, and Zwane says he is determined to end that wait. He believes the players must embrace the responsibility that comes with representing the club and make a lasting contribution during the campaign.

“We are under pressure to win something this season as a club to bring back our fans to the stadium as a club,” said Zwane on UKhozi FM.

“That’s an honest truth; I can’t run away from it. It’s been a long time with AmaZulu not winning a trophy.

“I spoke to the players, asking them if they wanna be fans or champions. I asked if they do want to make a mark, with a big contribution.

“That would mean that whenever they leave, people they would remember them.”

Zwane’s comments underline the importance of the forthcoming Betway Premiership season for a club whose league position improved last term but whose wait for major silverware continues.

The fourth-place finish has raised the standard expected from AmaZulu, while the KZN Premier’s Cup triumph has provided an early indication of what the team can achieve. Zwane, however, has made clear that the club cannot afford to treat that win as the end of its ambitions.

Instead, he is challenging his squad to decide how it wants to be remembered. His message to the players is that they have an opportunity to move beyond simply being members of the team and become champions who leave a meaningful mark on AmaZulu.

The coach also recognises that improved performances and results will be important in rebuilding the connection between the club and its supporters. Winning a trophy, he says, would help bring fans back to the stadium and give them a reason to feel confident about the team’s direction.

AmaZulu’s success in the KZN Premier’s Cup has therefore added to the anticipation surrounding the new campaign. The club now begins the season with the encouragement of a trophy already secured, but also with the much greater expectation that comes from finishing fourth and showing signs of progress.

Zwane says he is not attempting to avoid that expectation. Instead, he has accepted it openly and placed the demand for silverware at the centre of AmaZulu’s objectives for the season.
