AmaZulu secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Kruger United to book their place in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Kruger United began with purpose, using an aggressive press as they looked to impose themselves on the match. Their intensity brought two early yellow cards, but AmaZulu created the first clear openings.
Marcel Dandjinou had to react quickly to tip Mbanjwa’s header over the crossbar, while Maqokolo failed to keep his finish down after being picked out by an excellent cross from Ngwenya.
The Village Boys enjoyed the greater share of possession during the first half, although their efforts to test AmaZulu goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela were largely restricted to shots from distance and threats from set-pieces.
United improved after the interval and came close to breaking the deadlock five minutes into the second half. Khethukuthula Ndlovu forced Mzimela into a save in the 50th minute as the home side searched for an opening.
A triple substitution by the home side shortly before the hour mark brought an immediate attacking threat. Wonderboy Makhubu helped create an opportunity for Celimpilo Ngema, whose effort was saved two minutes later.
Arthur Zwane then made three substitutions of his own, and AmaZulu were rewarded with the decisive chance in the 75th minute.
Tatenda Tavengwa was penalised for handling the ball inside the area, giving AmaZulu a penalty. Hendrick Ekstein kept his composure from the spot to put his side ahead.
Kruger United responded by increasing the pressure in search of an equaliser, but AmaZulu held firm during the closing stages.
Mzimela produced a crucial save in injury time, tipping Lesedi Kapinga’s curling attempt over the bar to preserve the lead.
AmaZulu saw out the remainder of the match and advanced to the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals.
