Amadou Coundoul: Sporting Gijon’s Senegalese forward linked with move to Coimbra

Amadou Coundoul, the Senegalese centre-forward currently at Sporting Gijon, is being linked with a move to Portuguese second-tier side Coimbra in what would be his first switch outside Spanish football.

The 24-year-old, who has a contract at El Molinon until 30 June 2029, is understood to be on the radar of the Liga Portugal 2 club as they explore attacking options for the new campaign. Coundoul is valued at around €200,000, a figure that would make any potential deal relatively modest by current market standards but could still require firm negotiations given his long-term deal in Asturias.

Coundoul joined Sporting Gijon’s first team from their affiliate side Sporting Atletico in August 2025 and has since been used across league and cup competitions. Last season he featured in Spain’s second tier and the Copa del Rey, registering limited but noteworthy contributions in front of goal as he adapts to the demands of a higher level.

Standing at 1.91m and predominantly right-footed, Coundoul offers a physical presence through the middle, a profile that may appeal to Coimbra as they attempt to strengthen for a promotion push in Liga Portugal 2. His development in Spain’s lower divisions before earning a place at Sporting Gijon’s senior side suggests a player still climbing through competitive levels.

With several years left on his current contract, Sporting Gijon are under no immediate pressure to sell, and any formal approach from Coimbra would need to reflect his status within the squad and his contractual security in Spain.
