Amadou Coundoul: Senegal striker joins Coimbra on loan from Sporting Gijon
Senegal forward Amadou Coundoul has joined Portuguese side Coimbra on loan from Spanish club Sporting Gijon. The 24-year-old centre-forward will spend the 2026-27 campaign in Liga Portugal 2, with the deal running until 30 June 2027.
Coundoul, who stands at 1.91m and favours his right foot, makes the move after a season split between Spain’s second tier and the lower divisions. He arrives in Portugal with a market valuation of around €200,000 and will add height and physical presence to Coimbra’s attacking options.
Last season, Coundoul featured for Sporting Gijon and their associated teams across league and cup competitions. In LaLiga2 he registered one goal in 15 appearances, while also scoring in the Copa del Rey, where he contributed one goal and one assist in three outings. Across Spain’s lower-tier leagues he added further minutes and goals, including strikes in the Segunda Federacion and promotion play-offs.
Born in Guediawaye, Senegal, Coundoul first established himself in Spain with UD Llanera, joining them in 2021. He later moved on free transfers to UD Montijo and then Sporting Atletico before stepping up to Sporting Gijon in August 2025. His progression through these clubs has largely come via short-term deals and free moves, with this latest switch representing his first loan outside Spain.
Coundoul’s loan to Coimbra is scheduled to end in June 2027, when he is due to return to Sporting Gijon at the conclusion of the agreement.
