Canadian star Alphonso Davies, who is of Liberian descent, made his long-awaited comeback on Tuesday night as Bayern Munich defeated Sporting CP 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League.

The full-back returned to action after spending nine months on the sidelines with an ACL injury.

Davies had been out since March, when he damaged the right knee ligament during a CONCACAF Nations League match against the United States. After 262 days of recovery, Africasoccer reported on Monday that he had finally been declared fit for selection.

He was named in Bayern’s matchday squad for the clash at the Allianz Arena and made his return late in the game, coming on in the 88th minute to replace Serge Gnabry. His appearance capped an encouraging night for the German champions, who fought back from an own goal to claim victory through strikes from Gnabry, Lennart Karl, and Jonathan Tah.

With his first minutes now behind him, Davies will be hoping for increased game time in the coming weeks as he works toward regaining full sharpness.
