Senegal’s national football coach, Aliou Cissé, exhibited a cautious optimism as his team prepares for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023. Addressing journalists on the eve of a friendly preparation match against Niger, Cissé acknowledged the weight of expectations on the reigning African champions and emphasized the necessity of hard work to achieve historic success.

Reflecting on his experience in three AFCON tournaments, including one triumph and two final appearances, Cissé maintained that mastering the competition is an elusive endeavor due to its unpredictable nature.

He emphasized the need for continual self-assessment, highlighting the unique challenges that each tournament presents.

The coach stressed that the approaching AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire requires a renewed focus, self-critique, and a cautious approach devoid of arrogance.

Cissé emphasized the importance of set pieces in closely contested matches, acknowledging the team’s concerted efforts to enhance their effectiveness in this aspect of the game.

He acknowledged the completion of the squad with the return of key players Gana Gueye and Youssouf Sabaly but expressed concern for the physical conditions of Boulaye Dia and Seny Dieng.

The medical team will assess their fitness after the Niger match, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of their readiness for the tournament.

Regarding the potential for new injuries against Niger, Cissé acknowledged the inherent risks in high-level football and urged his players to focus on delivering their best performance without succumbing to apprehensions about injuries.

In a heartfelt message to the Senegalese public, Cissé called for unwavering support from fans.

He emphasized the significance of their presence in Ivory Coast, underlining the proximity between Dakar and the tournament venue.

Cissé expressed the team’s gratitude for the overwhelming support received thus far and urged the public to replicate the enthusiasm witnessed during the match against Egypt.

As Senegal readies itself for AFCON 2023, Cissé’s message resonates with a call for unity and collective effort, reinforcing the team’s commitment to making history.
