Aliou Cissé in talks for Libya head coach role

Former Senegal national team coach Aliou Cissé is reportedly in discussions to take charge of the Libya national team, according to Sport News Africa.

Cissé, who led Senegal to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2022, has been without a managerial role since parting ways with the Teranga Lions after their Round of 16 exit at AFCON 2024.

With Libya currently in search of a new head coach, the 47-year-old has emerged as a potential candidate to take over the Mediterranean Knights.

Libya’s national team has been without a permanent manager following the departure of Corentin Martins, and the Libyan Football Federation is reportedly seeking an experienced coach to guide the team through the remainder of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Cissé’s strong track record with Senegal makes him a high-profile candidate, given his ability to build competitive teams and his experience in African football.

During his tenure with Senegal, Cissé transformed the team into one of Africa’s most formidable sides.

Under his leadership, Senegal not only won AFCON 2022 but also qualified for back-to-back World Cups in 2018 and 2022.

His tactical expertise and familiarity with the African football landscape could be an asset for Libya as they look to improve their performances on the continental and global stage.

Libya currently faces an uphill battle in World Cup qualifying and will need a strong leadership figure to turn their fortunes around. While discussions between Cissé and Libyan officials remain unofficial, securing a coach of his caliber would be a significant statement of intent from the North African nation.

With the next round of international fixtures approaching, Libya is expected to make a decision soon regarding their next head coach. If Cissé is appointed, it would mark the beginning of a new chapter in his managerial career and a potential turning point for Libyan football.
