Algeria midfielder Ramiz Zerrouki has been ruled out of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Botswana and Mozambique due to injury.
National team coach Vladimir Petković received confirmation that Zerrouki would not recover in time for the crucial fixtures.
The Feyenoord player has been sidelined for a month and remains out of contention, with his club manager Robin van Persie admitting there has been little improvement in his condition. There are now concerns that the 25-year-old’s season could come to an early end.
Zerrouki has been a consistent feature in Petković’s plans since the coach took charge, but his absence is not expected to significantly impact the squad.
The return of Ismaël Bennacer and Hicham Boudaoui, who missed the previous training camp, is set to bolster Algeria’s midfield options.
Mixed Fan Reception
Zerrouki’s performances for Algeria have often divided opinion among fans. Introduced to the national team under former coach Djamel Belmadi, the Dutch-born player has been regarded for his tactical discipline.
However, his displays have not always won over supporters, despite the backing he received from both Belmadi and Petković.
Algeria will look to navigate the qualifiers without Zerrouki as they aim to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup, with Bennacer and Boudaoui expected to play key roles in his absence.
