Algerian international and SCO Angers midfielder Himad Saïd Abdeli has emerged as a strong contender for increased involvement in Algeria’s national team under head coach Vladimir Petkovic. Known for his consistency and steady development, Abdeli’s performances this season have underscored his potential as a valuable asset to Algeria’s lineup as the team aims to bolster its midfield options.
Abdeli’s standout season with Angers, where he has delivered solid performances game after game, recently earned him a place in L’Equipes team of the year, a significant milestone that highlights his ongoing progress in Ligue 1.
The Montivilliers native, who trained at Le Havre AC—where Algerian star Riyad Mahrez also honed his skills—has become a crucial player for SCO Angers.
His form was evident in Angers’ recent 1-0 victory over AS Monaco at the Stade Louis II, where Abdeli’s contributions in midfield were instrumental.
As Abdeli nears his 25th birthday on November 17, his consistency and influence in Angers’ squad are clear.
In ten matches this season, he has scored three goals, cementing his role in manager Alexandre Dujeux’s team, which also includes Algerian compatriots Zineddine Ferhat, Haris Belkebla, and Farid El-Melali.
With his keen positioning and attacking support, Abdeli has distinguished himself among his peers, drawing attention as a potential answer to Algeria’s midfield challenges.
Abdeli’s journey with the Algerian national team began under former coach Djamel Belmadi.
He made his debut on June 18, 2023, in a pivotal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Uganda in Douala, Cameroon, where he played 68 minutes before being substituted by Houssem Aouar in a 2-1 win.
Just two days later, he featured again, coming on as a late substitute in a friendly match against Tunisia, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the May 19, 1956 Stadium in Annaba.
Abdeli’s third and most recent appearance in Algeria’s colours came on September 7, 2023, in another AFCON qualifier against Tanzania, where he was replaced in the 68th minute by Said Benrahma.
Despite limited playing time, Abdeli left an impression with his tactical understanding and strong presence on the pitch.
Since then, Abdeli’s name has remained on the national team’s extended list, but he has yet to feature in Petkovic’s plans.
Most recently, he was called up for the FIFA Series Tournament in March 2024 but did not make an appearance in Algeria’s matches against Bolivia and South Africa.
As Petkovic seeks to enhance the team’s depth and versatility in midfield, Abdeli’s recent form could make him a compelling option to revisit, especially given his unique qualities.
Abdeli’s style—a combination of robust dueling, powerful long-range shots, and relentless movement—offers a tactical edge that could complement Algeria’s existing midfield structure.
His ability to play just behind the forwards adds another dimension to his game, making him a suitable fit for Petkovic’s evolving strategy.
With seasoned players like Riyad Mahrez and Said Benrahma already established in the squad, Abdeli’s inclusion would bring balance and provide Algeria with fresh options as they prepare for upcoming tournaments.
As Algeria looks ahead to future competitions, Abdeli’s attributes and recent performances could make him a key figure in their lineup.
His skillset, experience in Ligue 1, and hunger for international success position him as a promising asset for Algeria’s national team—a player capable of both supporting and leading the next generation of Algerian football talent.
