Algerian international Houssem Aouar has outlined his greatest career ambition: to lift a major title with the national team, calling it the “Holy Grail” of his professional journey.
The midfielder, who has increasingly become a central figure within Algeria’s setup, shared his aspirations in a candid reflection on the team’s direction ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. For Aouar, the goal is not just to compete but to triumph.
“This is the dream,” Aouar stated. “Winning a title with Algeria would be the highlight of my career. We have a strong squad, talented players, and a clear vision. Our goal is simple. We want to win.”
Aouar, who switched international allegiance from France to Algeria, believes the current national team has the depth and quality required to compete at the highest level.
Under the leadership of head coach Vladimir Petkovic and with the backing of the Algerian Football Federation, Aouar sees a rejuvenated team capable of contending for honours.
“There is great ambition within the group,” he said. “Coach Petkovic has brought a strong mentality and structure, and the Federation is supporting us in every way.
We carry a huge responsibility to perform, not just for ourselves, but for the millions of fans who believe in us.”
As Algeria prepares for the upcoming AFCON, expectations are high. The tournament, set to take place in Morocco, promises to be one of the most competitive editions in recent memory.
Aouar acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge but stressed that rigorous preparation and mental focus would be key to success.
“We know the road will be tough,” he admitted. “There are no easy matches at this level. But if we’re physically and mentally ready at the right moment, we can go far. That’s why the build-up to the tournament is so important.”
Despite the determination to win, Aouar remains pragmatic about setbacks, pointing to recent results including a defeat in a friendly against Sweden as opportunities for learning rather than reasons for alarm.
“Sometimes a loss is more valuable than a win,” he explained. “These matches show us where we need to improve. The most important thing is to arrive at the tournament in the best possible condition. Physically, tactically, and mentally.”
Aouar’s commitment to the Algerian national cause is a reflection of his broader ambition to leave a lasting legacy in international football.
With the midfielder now fully integrated into the team, his focus remains fixed on contributing to what he hopes will be a historic campaign for Algeria.
As the countdown to AFCON 2025 continues, Aouar’s words serve as both a personal pledge and a call to arms for his teammates. A reminder that for Algeria, the mission is not just to participate, but to win.
