Algeria’s home-based national team touched down in Kampala on Friday evening as they prepare to compete in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will run from August 2 to 30.
The squad, led by forward Aymen Mahious, landed in the Ugandan capital at approximately 7 p.m. Algerian time following a direct flight from Algiers.
Upon arrival, the players were greeted with a colourful and traditional welcome, capturing the vibrant spirit of the host nation and setting the tone for the weeks ahead.
A warm reception awaited the team at the airport, where the Algerian ambassador to Uganda, along with members of the diplomatic mission, were present to receive the delegation.
The welcome, marked by song and dance, served to immediately immerse the players in the local culture and atmosphere of the tournament.
Algeria has been drawn into Group C of the competition and will play all but one of their group matches in Kampala.
The team begins their campaign on Monday, August 4, with a highly anticipated encounter against hosts Uganda at the Mandela National Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Algerian time.
Four days later, on Friday, August 8, the Algerians will face South Africa at the same venue, with the match set to begin at 3:00 p.m. Their third fixture in Kampala comes on Friday, August 15, when they take on Guinea, also at 3:00 p.m.
The final group stage match will see the team travel to Nairobi, Kenya, to meet Niger at the Nyayo National Stadium. That match will take place on Monday, August 18, with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Algerian time.
The CHAN tournament, reserved exclusively for players competing in their respective domestic leagues, offers a vital platform for emerging talents to showcase their abilities on the continental stage.
Algeria, which hosted the previous edition of the tournament, will be looking to build on its strong footballing tradition and make a significant impact this time around on foreign soil.
Head coach and technical staff have expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness, highlighting the team’s cohesion and preparation over recent weeks. With a mix of experience and promising local talent, the Greens are seen as one of the teams to watch in this year’s competition.
The players are expected to conduct their final training sessions in Kampala over the weekend, as they adjust to local conditions and finalize tactical preparations ahead of Monday’s opener.
As excitement builds both at home and among the Algerian community in Uganda, all eyes will be on Mahious and his teammates as they begin their quest for continental glory in East Africa.
