Algerian winger Anis Hadj-Moussa was absent from both of Algeria’s recent 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Botswana and Mozambique, with the official reason cited as an injury.
However, new revelations from former Feyenoord interim coach Pascal Bosschaart have shed light on the severity of the issue.
While the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) provided no further details about the nature of Hadj-Moussa’s injury, Bosschaart has disclosed that the player had been competing through pain for several weeks.
The coach revealed that Hadj-Moussa played multiple matches in February despite suffering from a fractured rib—an injury that had not been publicly known until now.
“He played for a while with a fractured rib, which no one knew about. He continued to fight on the pitch,” Bosschaart said, commending the 22-year-old’s determination.
Competing through pain
The revelation has sparked debate over whether Hadj-Moussa’s injury may have affected his performances in recent months.
During February, the winger featured in six matches, including appearances in the Champions League, pushing his physical limits despite the underlying injury.
While neither Feyenoord nor the FAF has officially confirmed whether this was the reason behind his absence from the national team squad, it appears increasingly likely that his omission was a necessary step to allow him to recover.
Return to fitness in focus
With crucial fixtures ahead for both club and country, Hadj-Moussa’s recovery timeline remains uncertain.
His absence from the Algerian squad may have been a precautionary measure to prevent further complications.
However, Feyenoord will be eager to have him back to full fitness as they continue their push for domestic and European success.
For now, all eyes will be on his rehabilitation, with fans hopeful that he can return to action before the end of the month and regain top form for the remainder of the season.
