Anis Hadj Moussa is reportedly on the verge of a surprising switch to Benfica, despite previous links to Lille and Liverpool.
The Algerian winger, who enjoyed a breakout season with Feyenoord Rotterdam, is said to have reached an agreement in principle with the Portuguese giants.
Hadj Moussa has given his approval for a move to Lisbon after weeks of speculation surrounding his future.
The 23-year-old’s name had been heavily associated with a move to France’s Ligue 1 or even England’s Premier League, but it now appears that Benfica have emerged as the frontrunners in the race for his signature.
After a stellar campaign at Feyenoord, where he racked up 11 goals and 6 assists across 44 appearances—including several standout performances in the Champions League—Hadj Moussa quickly caught the eye of top clubs across Europe.
Lille had identified him as a potential replacement for Edon Zhegrova and were believed to be in advanced talks.
Liverpool, too, had been keeping tabs on the Algerian international, who began his career at RC Lens.
Benfica, however, have taken decisive steps and now appear close to sealing the deal.
While personal terms with the player are said to be agreed, Feyenoord’s valuation remains a sticking point.
The Dutch side, who signed Hadj Moussa for €3.5 million in the summer of 2024, are now demanding a €25 million transfer fee.
Despite receiving multiple offers, the Eredivisie club has held firm, turning down each proposal thus far.
Benfica are reportedly preparing an improved bid in the coming days to meet Feyenoord’s demands and finalize the transfer.
The Portuguese outfit, who finished second in last season’s Primeira Liga, are keen to bolster their attacking options ahead of their Champions League campaign.
Fueling speculation further was Hadj Moussa’s absence from Feyenoord’s recent friendly against Genk.
While whispers of an impending exit grew louder, head coach Robin van Persie moved quickly to downplay the situation, explaining that the player had been rested as a precaution following a minor knock.
Nevertheless, the timing of the absence has added weight to reports of an imminent departure.
If the deal goes through, it would mark a significant step forward in Hadj Moussa’s career, placing him on one of Europe’s biggest stages and confirming Benfica’s intent to secure emerging talent from across the continent.
