Algerian veteran Raïs M’Bolhi eyes national team return with ES Mostaganem move
Raïs M’Bolhi is preparing a final chapter to his distinguished career, with the 39-year-old Algerian goalkeeper on the verge of joining ES Mostaganem for the 2025–2026 campaign.
Out of contract since parting ways with CR Belouizdad in July 2024, the seasoned shot-stopper is determined to return to top-flight football and revive his international ambitions.
The veteran is poised to sign for Ligue 1 Mobilis side ES Mostaganem, marking a continued presence in Algerian domestic football.
Despite being out of action for nearly 20 months, M’Bolhi remains driven by the prospect of a comeback that could see him re-enter the national setup and possibly compete in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, as well as the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
M’Bolhi’s previous spell in the Algerian top tier was far from ideal. His move to CR Belouizdad ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations initially bolstered his national team credentials under then-coach Djamel Belmadi.
However, he quickly slipped down the pecking order, finishing as the third-choice goalkeeper during the continental tournament—a demotion that reportedly bruised his pride.
After the AFCON campaign, M’Bolhi did not feature again for Chabab, with the official explanation citing an arm injury sustained during the tournament.
Nonetheless, the true reasons behind his absence remained unclear. He would go on to terminate his contract at the end of the season, entering an extended period of inactivity.
Now, with ES Mostaganem narrowly avoiding relegation last season, the club sees M’Bolhi’s experience as a potential asset. However, there are significant hurdles—particularly financial ones.
At CR Belouizdad, the former national team captain was earning a substantial wage reportedly worth 650 million centimes per month, excluding bonuses.
With Mostaganem currently dealing with financial constraints, a compromise on salary would be essential for the move to materialise.
Even if the financial aspect is resolved, questions remain over how M’Bolhi will stand out in a team battling at the foot of the table.
The lack of exposure and competitive edge could make it difficult for him to reclaim the national team’s number-one jersey, especially with other goalkeepers in the frame.
MC Alger’s new signing Alexis Guendouz appears to be leading the race for the top spot under current coach Vladimir Petkovic. With the added bonus of Champions League football and a more central role at club level, Guendouz presents a strong case.
Anthony Mandréa and Mustapha Zeghba remain in the conversation as well, while Moustapha Benbot provides further depth.
Still, M’Bolhi’s extensive international experience—96 caps for Algeria—cannot be overlooked. The serious knee injury to Alexandre Oukidja may have shifted the dynamics, creating a potential opening for a return.
Whether M’Bolhi can rise to the challenge remains uncertain, but his determination to push for a place in the squad for the AFCON and possibly the World Cup is clear.
For now, all eyes are on Mostaganem to see whether the deal can be finalised, and if one of Algeria’s most iconic goalkeepers can write one last remarkable chapter in his storied career.
