Algerian starlet Maghnes Akliouche poised to bolster Monaco in Espoirs challenge final

Maghnes Akliouche could make a timely return to action with AS Monaco’s reserve team as they prepare for the final of the Challenge Espoirs against Rennes on May 21 in Ploufragan.

The 22-year-old Algerian attacking midfielder, who has spent much of the season featuring prominently for Monaco’s first team, is expected to be included in the squad for the final of the new under-23 competition.

While he did not participate in the semi-final victory over Montpellier — a convincing 3-1 win — his potential involvement in the final could provide a decisive edge for the Monegasque side.

Akliouche, who was developed at the club’s prestigious academy, is known for his composure under pressure, precise dribbling, and ability to operate between the lines.

His technical finesse and top-flight experience could prove critical in a match where tactical balance and individual flair may decide the outcome.

Alongside Akliouche, another key figure in Monaco’s reserve team setup is fellow Algerian midfielder Maysam Benama, who captains the Elite Group.

Benama has been central to Monaco’s success in the competition, anchoring the midfield with maturity and consistency.

His partnership with Akliouche, should the latter feature, may add a layer of creativity and control that Monaco will rely upon to break down a resilient Rennes side.

Rennes earned their place in the final by edging out Toulouse in a tense semi-final that ended 1-1, with the Breton side advancing 4-3 on penalties. Known for their structured play and defensive discipline, Rennes will pose a formidable challenge.

However, Monaco may take confidence from their earlier 1-0 win over Rennes in the group phase, a tightly contested encounter that showcased the tactical nous of Djimi Traoré’s coaching setup.

The Monaco staff, who turned out in numbers to observe the semi-final, are reportedly considering reinforcing the squad for the final with select senior players.

Akliouche, whose Ligue 1 displays this season have drawn praise, appears the ideal candidate to inject composure and creativity into a young, high-performing unit.

While the Challenge Espoirs is designed to highlight emerging talent from across French football’s development pathways, the inclusion of players like Akliouche aligns with the competition’s vision: to bridge the gap between youth and senior football. For Monaco, adding his pedigree and leadership could be the final push needed to secure the trophy.

This final also presents an opportunity for Akliouche to cement his leadership role within the club’s setup, inspiring his younger teammates while continuing to build his own case for consistent senior involvement.

His participation, if confirmed, will likely be a focal point of Monaco’s tactical approach against a Rennes team intent on making their own mark in the competition.

As anticipation builds for the decisive clash in Ploufragan, Monaco fans and scouts alike will be watching closely to see whether Akliouche can lead his side to silverware and offer another glimpse of the talent that continues to rise from the Principality’s academy ranks.
