Algerian Rafik Guitane scores again but Estoril fall to defeat against Vitoria Guimaraes

Rafik Guitane continued his fine run of form with another goal for Estoril, though his side ultimately fell to a 3-2 defeat against Vitoria Guimaraes in the Portuguese top flight.

The Algerian midfielder, who impressed earlier in the week against Estrella Amadora, once again proved decisive in the attacking phase and underlined why clubs, including Spanish side Elche, are closely monitoring his situation. With speculation over his future still lingering, Guitane delivered another reminder of his quality, even as Estoril left the pitch empty-handed.

Estoril began the contest brightly and were rewarded in the 18th minute. A well-worked move down the right flank saw a cross delivered into the area, where Begraoui’s strike forced a parry from the goalkeeper.

Guitane reacted quickest to the rebound, steering the ball past the recovering defence despite the goalkeeper getting a touch. The goal gave Estoril a deserved early lead and highlighted Guitane’s sharpness in front of goal.

However, Vitoria Guimaraes gradually grew into the match, putting pressure on Estoril’s defensive lines. Their response was swift, with sustained possession and incisive play eventually bringing an equaliser.

Estoril struggled to maintain the composure that had allowed them to control the opening exchanges, and by the half-time whistle the contest had become far more balanced, with both sides creating opportunities.

The second half unfolded in dramatic fashion. Guimaraes capitalised on defensive lapses to turn the game around, punishing Estoril’s inability to close down attacks quickly enough.

Estoril showed resilience, however, hitting back to bring the score to 2-2 through a determined spell of pressure. Guitane remained heavily involved, linking play and driving his team forward with composure in midfield.

Despite their efforts, Estoril’s resolve cracked late on. Vitoria Guimaraes found a decisive breakthrough, restoring their lead and sealing the victory with a third goal that Estoril were unable to respond to.

The defeat was a bitter pill for a side that had shown flashes of attacking quality but struggled to maintain defensive discipline in key moments.

For Guitane, however, the match was another personal success. After a difficult previous season in which consistency often eluded him, the 27-year-old looks revitalised and sharper in front of goal.

His recent performances have reignited speculation about a potential move, with Elche reportedly keen on securing his services. If Estoril are unable to hold on to him, his current form could attract further interest before the close of the transfer window.

The defeat leaves Estoril with questions to answer regarding their defensive structure, while Guimaraes will take confidence from their ability to fight back and secure three points.

For now, Guitane’s continued resurgence remains the brightest spot for Estoril, who will hope his influence can help stabilise their campaign despite the early setback in the league.

As rumours of a move abroad persist, each passing match strengthens Guitane’s position as a key figure for Estoril, but also as a player whose form may soon earn him a fresh challenge elsewhere.
