Algerian midfielder Nabil Bentaleb accepts AFCON 2025 snub with dignity
Left out of Algeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nabil Bentaleb opened up about his disappointment while carefully avoiding any controversy.
The midfielder admitted he had believed his efforts would be enough to earn a place in the team, saying: “I was very disappointed. I thought I was on the right track and had made the necessary efforts to be part of this group.”
Despite his frustration, Bentaleb quickly underlined his respect for the coaching staff’s choices, adding: “The decision is what it is. The coach has his reasons, he made his choices, and I respect them.” He insisted his attachment to the national team remains intact and pledged to support the Greens during the tournament: “I wish them all the best for the tournament. I will be experiencing this AFCON as a supporter.”
Showing maturity, he chose to put things into perspective: “I’m disappointed, but that’s all there is to it; we’re moving on. There are more serious things in life,” explaining that this period will allow him “to work a little more at the club” and “refocus on the team as a whole.” Bentaleb concluded by expressing his ambition: “I hope to return for the World Cup… In the meantime, I will be an Algerian like any other and I will support the nation.”
