Algerian midfielder Ismaël Bennacer’s half-time substitution sparks debate in Milan derby
Ismaël Bennacer’s unexpected withdrawal at half-time in AC Milan’s 1-1 draw against Inter Milan has triggered widespread debate among fans and analysts.
The Algerian midfielder was instrumental in Milan’s strong first half, playing a key role in their opening goal and maintaining an impressive 89% pass completion rate.
However, despite his solid performance, manager Sergio Conceição opted to substitute him at the break—a move that puzzled many.
Conceição later justified his decision as a tactical adjustment aimed at countering Inter’s rapid transitions.
“It’s not that Bennacer didn’t do what he had to do. I just needed other characteristics in midfield,” he told DZ FOOT.
“We had to control the game better in the face of Inter’s pressure. They were quick in transitions, so I opted for a tactical adjustment.”
However, the change failed to deliver the intended impact. Milan struggled to maintain their grip on the game in the second half, ultimately conceding a late equalizer as Inter applied relentless pressure.
Bennacer’s removal remains a talking point, with many questioning whether his presence could have secured a better result for the Rossoneri.
