Algerian midfielder Anis Hadj Moussa has spoken candidly about the challenges he faced after joining Feyenoord, revealing how adapting to a new footballing culture tested both his mindset and determination.
The 20-year-old, who made the move to the Dutch champions during the January transfer window, admitted in an interview with Hand in Hand magazine that his early days in Rotterdam were far from easy.
Having been recruited to bolster Feyenoord’s midfield ranks, Hadj Moussa quickly realised that the step up required more than just technical ability.
“It was a real shift for me,” he explained. “Everything was different from what I was used to—the style of play, the club’s organisation, even the training facilities.
We often played on artificial turf, which was something I’d barely experienced before. That changes the way you move, the way you play. It takes time to adjust.”
That period of adaptation was not without moments of uncertainty. The former USM Alger youth product acknowledged that doubts occasionally crept in as he questioned whether he had made the right move.
“Of course, there were moments when I asked myself, ‘Did I make the right choice? Can I really establish myself as a professional here?’” he admitted. “But I kept faith in my abilities. I worked relentlessly, gave everything in training, and refused to let fear or hesitation stop me.”
Rather than be discouraged by unfamiliar surroundings, Hadj Moussa channelled his energy into self-improvement. He emphasised the importance of perseverance and discipline, drawing strength from his ambition to succeed at the highest level. “I pushed myself every day, never looked back. I kept moving forward.”
Six months on from his arrival, the young Algerian is convinced he made the right decision. “Looking back now, I know it was the right move. If I hadn’t taken this step, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said, with quiet conviction.
Hadj Moussa now aims to cement his place in the Feyenoord squad and prove that he can thrive in a top European league. While his journey is still in its early stages, the midfielder remains focused on developing his game and earning the trust of the coaching staff.
His story is one of courage and adaptation, a reminder of the mental challenges young players face when transitioning to unfamiliar environments. With his sights now firmly set on the future, Hadj Moussa is determined to make his mark—not only in the Eredivisie, but across the European stage.
