Algerian forward Amine Gouiri targets early January comeback for Marseille
Amine Gouiri is edging closer to a return, less than three months after suffering a serious right shoulder injury on 14 October against Uganda.
The Olympique Marseille forward, who underwent surgery for repeated dislocations, is progressing faster than expected in his recovery. His comeback, initially forecast for mid-January, could now happen as early as 8 January in the Trophée des Champions against Paris Saint-Germain in Kuwait.
This timeline is a huge boost for OM and Roberto De Zerbi, who will lose Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the Africa Cup of Nations with Gabon and see Gouiri as a key attacking asset to kick off 2026. Some French outlets even mention a possible first appearance a few days earlier at home to Nantes.
Gouiri’s rapid progress also revives debate around his absence from AFCON with Algeria. Officially ruled out, he might actually be fit once the tournament reaches its knockout stages, raising questions over whether he could join the squad later depending on Algeria’s run.
Between Marseille’s desire to recover him quickly and the national team’s potential need for a late reinforcement, his case could become sensitive, while Gouiri remains focused on returning fully fit and ready for a decisive role at the 2026 World Cup.
