The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has initiated talks with Spain about arranging a friendly match between the two national teams in 2026.
These discussions took place during the 75th FIFA Congress in Asunción, Paraguay, where FAF President Walid Sadi met with Rafael Louzán Abal, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
According to a FAF statement, the meeting covered potential collaboration in areas such as youth football development, futsal, and women’s football. However, the standout topic was the proposed senior international friendly between Algeria and Spain.
If confirmed, this match would serve as a key part of Algeria’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, provided they secure qualification.
Spain, the 2010 World Cup winners and recent UEFA Euro 2024 champions, would offer strong opposition for the Algerian side.
The two teams have not faced each other since their last encounter at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where Spain secured a 3-0 victory.
Under the leadership of Vladimir Petković, Algeria is eager to return to the world stage after missing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The FAF has expressed a clear intention to organise high-profile friendlies ahead of the 2026 tournament.
While the friendly is still in the early planning phase, both federations have shown enthusiasm for the idea.
Details such as the venue and date are yet to be decided, with options including hosting the match in Algeria, Spain, or a neutral location. Further logistical talks are expected in the coming months.
