Algerian Football Federation condemns alleged racist abuse against Mehdi Dorval

Algerian Football Federation condemns alleged racist abuse against Mehdi Dorval

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has voiced its support for Mehdi Dorval following an alleged racist incident during Bari’s Serie B match against Cremonese on Saturday.

Dorval, an Algerian U23 international with two caps, reportedly broke down in tears after being subjected to racist insults from Cremonese’s Argentine midfielder Franco Vázquez.

The incident, which occurred during the 26th round of Italy’s second-tier league, led to a brief stoppage in play as teammates gathered around to console the visibly emotional full-back.

Recurring racist abuse

This is not the first time Dorval has faced racist behavior on the pitch. In January, during Bari’s goalless draw against Reggiana on matchday 21, the defender was allegedly targeted with monkey chants from sections of the crowd.

At the time, he remained composed despite the abuse.

However, the latest incident against Cremonese appeared to overwhelm him, highlighting the emotional toll such discrimination continues to take on players.

Footage circulating online shows the 22-year-old in distress, surrounded by concerned teammates who attempted to comfort him.

While Cremonese has denied the accusations against Vázquez, witnesses at the match insist they heard offensive remarks directed at Dorval.

FAF issues strong statement

In response to the incident, the FAF released an official statement on its social media platforms, reaffirming its stance against racism in football.

The Algerian Football Federation, chaired by Mr. Walid Sadi, expresses its full support for our player Mehdi Dorval, after he was the subject of racist remarks.

The Federation also affirms its support for FIFA’s efforts to combat racism in football stadiums.

The incident has reignited concerns over racism in Italian football, with growing calls for stricter measures to protect players from abuse.

As authorities investigate the claims, the FAF’s strong condemnation serves as a reminder of the urgent need to address racism in the sport.
