Youcef Belaïli set to remain at Espérance de Tunis after fresh talks

Algeria international Youcef Belaïli is close to extending his stay at Espérance Sportive de Tunis after fresh negotiations between the player and the Tunisian club moved significantly closer to an agreement.

The 34-year-old’s future has been the subject of speculation throughout the summer transfer window, with reports linking him to a return to MC Alger.

However, recent developments suggest the experienced winger is now on the verge of continuing his career with the Tunisian champions.

According to several Tunisian media outlets, discussions between Belaïli and Espérance have accelerated in recent days, with the player giving his approval in principle to the club’s latest contract proposal.

The revised agreement differs from the long-term deal that had initially been discussed.

Instead, Belaïli is expected to sign a one-year contract, which would include the possibility of an extension if the agreed conditions are met.

The decision to offer a shorter contract follows recommendations from the club’s medical committee after the player underwent a series of physical assessments.

Medical staff believe Belaïli has not yet fully recovered from the serious knee injury he suffered towards the end of last year and that he still requires a specific rehabilitation programme before returning to full fitness.

As a result, Espérance opted for a more cautious approach by proposing a shorter-term agreement rather than committing to a multi-year contract.

Despite the revised terms, the development has reportedly done little to affect the player’s commitment to the club.

Belaïli is said to have reaffirmed his desire to remain with the Blood and Gold and help the team achieve its objectives during the upcoming season.

Although the agreement is now close, a number of formalities must still be completed before the deal can be officially confirmed.

The contract also depends on the outcome of the ongoing dispute involving the player and FIFA. A decision is expected on 6 August, and the ruling will determine when the proposed agreement can take effect.

If the remaining administrative procedures are completed as expected, Belaïli is anticipated to sign his new contract before joining Espérance’s pre-season training camp in Gammarth.
