Algeria U16: Karim Ziani’s young greens set for crucial Saudi Arabia preparation tour
Algeria’s U16 national team will travel to Saudi Arabia next month for a training camp designed to continue preparations for the upcoming North African Football Union tournament, with Karim Ziani’s young squad set to play two friendly matches during the trip.
The training camp will run from 1 to 10 June 2026 and forms part of Algeria’s build-up to the UNAF competition scheduled for September in Tunisia.
The tournament will also serve as a qualifying pathway for the next U17 Africa Cup of Nations, increasing the importance of every stage of preparation for the young Algerian side.
During their stay in Saudi Arabia, the young Greens will face their Saudi counterparts twice in friendly matches planned for 6 and 9 June in the city of Dammam.
The trip represents another important step in the development of the U16 project launched last summer and entrusted to former Algeria international Karim Ziani.
Since taking charge of the youth side, Ziani has been tasked with helping shape a new generation of Algerian talent capable of competing at continental level in the years ahead.
The upcoming camp in Saudi Arabia is expected to provide valuable competitive experience for the squad as they continue adapting to international football.
Friendly matches at youth level often play a crucial role in player development, allowing coaches to evaluate tactical understanding, discipline and the ability of players to respond under pressure.
For Algeria’s technical staff, the two matches against Saudi Arabia will offer another opportunity to assess the progress made by the squad ahead of more demanding official competitions later in the year.
The UNAF tournament in Tunisia remains the primary target for the group at this stage of their development.
Qualification for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations is a major objective for the Algerian federation, particularly as the country continues investing in youth football structures and long-term player development.
Establishing strong foundations at U16 level is viewed as a key part of that strategy.
Karim Ziani’s appointment last year attracted considerable attention given his status as one of Algeria’s most recognised former internationals.
The former midfielder has gradually begun building his coaching profile while passing on his experience to younger generations.
Under his guidance, the U16 side has already shown encouraging signs.
Earlier this year, Algeria participated in a friendly UNAF tournament held in Tunisia, where the team produced positive results against regional opposition.
The young Greens recorded two victories and also secured a draw against Morocco, performances that provided early indications of the group’s potential.
Those results helped strengthen confidence within the squad while also giving the coaching staff clearer insight into the strengths and areas requiring improvement before official competition begins.
The Saudi Arabia training camp therefore arrives at an important moment in the team’s preparation calendar.
With several months remaining before the UNAF tournament, the technical staff are expected to focus not only on tactical organisation but also on strengthening cohesion within the group.
At youth level, building collective understanding can often prove just as important as individual talent.
The matches against Saudi Arabia should also offer a different type of challenge compared with previous fixtures played in North Africa.
Facing opponents from another footballing environment may help Algeria’s young players gain additional experience and improve their adaptability.
For the players involved, the camp represents another opportunity to impress the coaching staff and strengthen their place within the national setup.
Competition for places is expected to remain intense as Algeria continues monitoring emerging talents capable of progressing through the country’s youth system in the coming years.
The federation’s long-term ambition is clearly centred around preparing players capable of eventually reaching the senior national team.
Camps such as the one scheduled in Saudi Arabia are therefore viewed as essential stages in that broader process.
While results in friendly matches are not always the primary objective at youth level, the experience gained from international competition remains invaluable for developing players mentally and tactically.
As preparations continue ahead of September’s qualifying tournament in Tunisia, Karim Ziani and his young squad will hope the Saudi Arabia camp provides another step forward in their development.
With two international matches, several days of preparation and the chance to continue building chemistry within the squad, Algeria’s U16 team now face an important phase in their journey toward the next U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
