Algeria will face Comoros in an international friendly on home soil this June, following the cancellation of a previously scheduled fixture against Niger.
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) confirmed the change after rising geopolitical tensions led to the decision to scrap the original match.
In response, FAF acted swiftly to secure a replacement opponent, finalising an agreement with the Comoros Football Federation.
The encounter will take place in Algeria, giving the Fennecs the opportunity to play in front of their home supporters.
Although a friendly, the fixture is expected to carry significant weight as national team coach Vladimir Petković looks to test new players and build tactical cohesion ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifiers and the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
For Petković, who is still in the early stages of shaping the team since taking over the helm, the June match represents more than a routine warm-up.
With limited international windows before competitive action resumes, the friendly will serve as a crucial checkpoint to assess squad depth, particularly among fringe players and rising domestic talents.
The Comoros, meanwhile, are steadily emerging as a competitive side on the African football scene. Although not considered among the traditional heavyweights,
Les Coelacanthes have impressed in recent years with their discipline and compact style of play, notably reaching the Round of 16 in their debut AFCON appearance in 2021.
Facing such an opponent provides a unique opportunity for Algeria to fine-tune their approach against a side known for its tactical organisation and defensive resilience.
It also offers a chance for players on the fringes of the national team to stake a claim for a permanent place in the squad.
The decision to retain the fixture in Algeria will also be welcomed by fans, who have had fewer chances to see their team play at home in recent months due to the scheduling of neutral or away fixtures.
The home crowd is expected to provide a vibrant atmosphere, reinforcing the importance of maintaining strong ties between the team and its supporters.
Algeria’s footballing ambitions remain high after a mixed 2023 that included early elimination from AFCON. With qualification for the 2026 World Cup and a strong showing in AFCON 2025 high on the agenda, the technical staff are under pressure to rebuild confidence and performance levels across the squad.
The exact date, venue, and kick-off time of the Algeria–Comoros friendly are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
However, preparations are already underway, with a training camp to be held in advance of the match as Petković continues shaping his vision for the future.
This fixture may not carry the weight of a competitive qualifier, but for Algeria, it is a vital step on the road to regaining their status among Africa’s elite footballing nations.
