Algeria target back-to-back wins at CHAN 2024 against South Africa

Algeria will aim to maintain their winning momentum at CHAN 2024 when they face South Africa on Friday afternoon.

The Fennecs opened their campaign in style earlier this week, delivering a commanding 3-0 victory over Uganda.

The result set an early marker in the competition, with Algeria showing the attacking sharpness and defensive solidity that will be crucial in the later stages.

Uganda, a side often present in the tournament’s decisive rounds, struggled to match the pace and precision of the Algerian attack.

Friday’s challenge comes in the form of South Africa, a nation still chasing a breakthrough performance in the competition.

Nicknamed Bafana Bafana, they hosted the tournament in 2014 but have never progressed to the semi-final stage.

This year, the South African squad will be determined to surpass their previous records and make a lasting impact in front of their home supporters.

For Algeria, the objective extends beyond a group-stage victory.

After falling short in the 2023 edition, the North African side is focused on securing their first CHAN title.

The players will be under no illusions about the importance of consistency at this stage, as each result builds both confidence and momentum toward the knockout rounds.

Kick-off is scheduled for 14:00 GMT at the Mandela National Stadium.

The venue is expected to host a lively crowd, with home fans backing South Africa’s bid to upset one of the tournament favourites.

While Algeria approach the game as favourites, the nature of CHAN — a competition reserved for players active in their domestic leagues — often delivers unpredictable outcomes.

South Africa’s blend of youthful energy and home-field advantage could provide a stern test for the Fennecs, who will need to manage the pressure of expectation.

Victory for Algeria would not only confirm their status as group leaders but also put them on the brink of qualification for the knockout phase.

For South Africa, three points would represent a statement win and a significant step toward making history in the competition.

As the countdown to kick-off continues, both sides will be acutely aware that CHAN’s tightly packed schedule leaves little room for recovery from early setbacks.

This encounter promises to be a decisive moment in shaping the trajectory of Group B.
