Algeria’s national football team confirmed their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory against Togo on Monday night. The win, secured away from home, marks Algeria’s fourth consecutive triumph in Group E and guarantees their qualification for the tournament in Morocco.

This result puts Algeria at the top of the group with an unassailable 12 points, leaving only Equatorial Guinea with any mathematical chance of catching the Desert Foxes.

However, with two games remaining, Algeria have already secured their spot in the AFCON finals for the eighth consecutive time.

The match in Lomé was a hard-fought contest, with both sides struggling to break the deadlock until Algeria finally found the breakthrough.

Despite their dominance in possession, the North African giants were frustrated by a determined Togo side that was eager to disrupt Algeria’s unbeaten run in the qualifiers.

The solitary goal, which came late in the second half, was enough to see Algeria safely through.

Although Togo mounted pressure, particularly in the final moments of the game, Algeria’s defence held firm, ensuring that their clean sheet remained intact.

Head coach Djamel Belmadi will be pleased with his team’s performance, having achieved qualification with two matches to spare.

Under Belmadi’s leadership, Algeria have demonstrated consistency and determination, continuing their upward trajectory in African football.

The Desert Foxes are now looking forward to the continental championship, which will take place in familiar territory—North Africa.

Algeria’s success in the tournament could be bolstered by its location.

They won their first AFCON title in 1990 on home soil and claimed their second in 2019 in Egypt, also in North Africa.

This history could serve as additional motivation as they aim for their third continental crown.

This qualification marks Algeria’s 21st appearance in the prestigious tournament, solidifying their status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

With a squad brimming with talent, including the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Ismaël Bennacer, and Baghdad Bounedjah, the two-time champions will head into the 2025 AFCON as one of the tournament favourites.

The Desert Foxes’ successful qualification adds to the growing excitement around the upcoming tournament in Morocco.

As Algeria continue their unbeaten run in the qualifiers, fans are already anticipating what could be another historic run in the AFCON finals.

Algeria’s remaining qualifiers will likely serve as an opportunity to fine-tune their tactics and give fringe players a chance to impress, while they set their sights on further continental glory in 2025.
