Crucial decision as Algeria plan second friendly ahead of 2026 World Cup
Algeria national football team are continuing preparations for the 2026 World Cup with plans to play two friendly matches in June, with the second opponent yet to be confirmed by the Algerian Football Federation.
The federation has already finalised the first of those matches, which will see Algeria face the Netherlands national football team on 3 June in Rotterdam.
The second fixture is expected to take place several days later in the United States against another team that has qualified for the World Cup.
However, the identity of that opponent has not yet been decided.
The FAF had been exploring several options while organising Algeria’s preparation schedule.
Possible opponents previously mentioned included Guatemala national football team, Uruguay national football team and the Netherlands, with the latter now confirmed.
Discussions over the final friendly are ongoing, and a clearer decision is expected after the March FIFA international window.
That period will feature the European play-offs, which could influence the availability of several national teams.
One of the sides previously considered was the Italy national football team.
Yet the possibility of an Algeria–Italy friendly has become increasingly complicated due to logistical constraints related to the World Cup schedule.
Italy are expected to base themselves in the United States during the tournament, with their training camp planned at Rock Chalk Park in Kansas City.
However, their match schedule places them in Group B alongside Canada national football team, Switzerland national football team and Qatar national football team.
As a result, their likely group-stage matches are scheduled in Toronto, Los Angeles and Seattle.
Those locations are considered too far from Kansas City, with travel times estimated between two and three-and-a-half hours by air, making the arrangement of an additional friendly less practical.
Another possibility could involve the England national football team, who are also expected to stay in Kansas City.
However, this option depends on whether England decide to organise a third warm-up match alongside their already scheduled fixtures against New Zealand national football team on 6 June and Costa Rica national football team on 10 June.
With Algeria scheduled to begin their campaign on 16 June and England on 17 June, the likelihood of an additional fixture remains uncertain.
For now, the identity of Algeria’s second friendly opponent in June remains unresolved as the federation continues its search for a suitable match before the World Cup begins.
